Plays 'The Word Girl' video

Very nice Green. Very nice indeed.

Thanks very much.

It looks like you had some old home movies stuck in there?

Um, it was home movies but it wasn't particularly old. But we did, y'know... we took a couple of days out, went down to Hastings and got a little fisherman to take us out on his boat. And, er, it was great.

What a nice idea.

And then went up to Hampstead Heath, to the fair, and shot the stuff ourselves.

Is that what you're into? Are you into photography?

Not particularly, no. I did go to art college for my sins but...

Yes, I know. You did a fine art course. What's the difference between the ordinary art course and a fine art course?

Pretention probably, is the only answer. [Interviewer laughs] Fine art is like, is painting, y'know, sculpture, things like that. And graphics would be design, magazines, layout, things like that.

You've got an incredible voice. It's very high. I mean, has it broken yet?

Yes, it's broken. [Interviewer laughs]

It's amazing. And I believe you're about to sing with Chaka Khan. I mean, those two voices...

I was supposed to sing with Chaka Khan, actually. I was supposed to do, um, the prince song that was a big hit ('I Feel For You') but I was busy over here promoting a single that we had out called 'Wood Beez', and so foolishly I said I'm too busy to come and do it.

Ooh, that would have been a great blend of voices.

Well, I think we're going to do it sometime, sometime soon.

You've also made the big break to America. Now a lot of people say "Oh I'm just going to go to America and see what's happening over there", but that's a big deal. I mean, you went to New York. How do you start to get that together?

Um, well the big thing is having someone to stay with, I think. I mean, you can fly there quite cheaply but without knowing somebody there, without having somewhere to stay, you really are lost. I did that once and had a really miserable time. So... but having friends out there, I had to rent an apartment eventually which is terribly expensive.

I can imagine.

But knowing people there is the trick.

Get some contacts there.

Yeah. Then it can be lots of fun.

Right. How did you get the name Green?

How did I get the name Green? Oh gosh. Well, um, I had a very ordinary Christian name - I think it's one of the five most popular boys names since the war, or something, so you can guess what it's like - and I thought that was a bit boring when I was at school. So just one sunny day I looked out of the window and everything was green, and I thought well that's a suitably eccentric name to have, so I chose it. And now my mother calls me Green and thinks that's quite funny.

Oh that's great!
