...title unknown...-- Bop, 1985
With smash hits like "Perfect Way" off their LP Cupid And Psyche 85, Scritti Politti, fronted by gorgeous singer Green, is winning fans right and left! The roots of Scritti Politti go back to 1979 when a Welsh art student named Green Gartside followed his heart's desire to "make a record" by turning it into a reality! Since that time, this pop trio, comprised of lead singer Green and his two bandmates, keyboardist Dave Gamson and drummer Fred Maher, has made its mark on the music scene in a big way! But as 29-year-old Green explains, the group underwent some changes along the way! "The start of the band came about when I convinced one of my friends to learn to play the bass and another friend to learn to play the drums. "All together, it took them about one month to learn their instruments and then we went and made a record," smiles the handsome singer/songwriter with a content gleam in his blue/green eyes. The result of their spur-of-the-moment effort was the 1981 album Songs To Remember, which was a Top 20 hit in Europe! However, despite its promising beginnings, the trio soon dwindled down to a solo act when Green's bandmates left, forcing him to front Scritti Politti by himself. But as this tall, lean talent confides, being in the spotlight aline just wasn't his cup of tea! "I never aspired to be a solo performer," insists Green as he runs his hand through his thick blond hair. "I prefer the feeling of security that comes with being part of a group." Fortunately, this smooth-as-silk-voiced singer didn't have to hold down the reigns of Scritti Politti all by his lonesome for too long! Backing up Green on the album Cupid And Psyche 85 are the band's latest additions, New York natives Dave Gamson and Fred Maher. And with an LP full of catchy dance tunes, it looks like phase two of Scritti Politti is proving to be a winning formula! "Working with Dave and Fred is interesting because we are learning together, testing each other out as partners and seeing how far we can take our friendship into our music," enthuses Green, whose words are flavored with his adorable British accent. "And since being the main force behind this band is not my goal, I appreciate Dave and Fred for contributing as much to the music as I do." If you have the impression that Green is a down-to-death guy who doesn't let success shadow his concern for others, you're right on target! But what you may still be wondering about this incredibly sexy performer is how he got the unusual name Green. No, Green isn't his real first name--it's a nickname! "Oh, it's a terribly boring story," he begins with a tinge of bashfulness. "I have a very ordinary first name and when I was about 16 years old, I decided I'd like a change. "Yet, I didn't want a rock 'n' roll sounding name," he's quick to add. "So one day I was on a train in England during the summer and I looked outside the window and everything just looked so green. And I thought, okay, Green--that's it Now even my mother calls me Green!" If the guys in Scritti Politti add color to your life, let them know how you feel in a letter!
